Step 1 – Choose and Buy a Domain Name

The first thing that you need to do when you want to make a website is choose a domain name and then purchase it. The domain name is the address that visitors will type into their browser when they want to navigate to your site. (e.g google.com, facebook.com, etc )

For this part of the process, you should put some thought into choosing the perfect domain. You want to choose a domain that is catchy and memorable so that your visitors can easily recall it.

If possible, include a prominent keyword from your site subject in the domain name. This gives both visitors and search engines an idea of what your site is about.

Once you decide what domain name you want to use, you need to find out if the domain is still available.

Domain Registrations starting at $9.98Namecheap.com is a good domain company to work with and you can look up available domain names with them. Once you find a domain that is available, you can buy it directly from Namecheap.com.

By the way, i recommend you to choose .com domain as opposed to other domain extension like .biz or .info, etc. The reason is a .com domain is usually rank better in search engine.

Step 2 – Choose and Buy Web Hosting

Ok, so you now have a domain name, the next step you need to do is to buy a web hosting package. A webhost is server that can hold your website’s files so that they will be available for others to see.

If you never create a website before, this step might seem a little confusing. But actually, it’s pretty simple and straightforward. You can undestand it better by looking at the diagram above.

Step 3 – Point the Domain Name Server to Hostgator

Now that you have a domain and a hosting package, you must point the domain to your website. This way, anyone who navigates to the domain will be taken to the site that you build.

To do this, find out the domain nameservers your hosting provided to you. In hostgator you can find it in your welcome email after you sign-up. Usually there are 2 nameserver that you need to copy paste, something in a format like ns123.hostgator.com , ns325.hostgator.com , etc.

After you find out what your name servers are, Log in to your namecheap account you created in Step 1. On your namecheap domain manager, you will be able to enter the name servers into your domain. This will associate your domain with your Web hosting package.

Step 4 – Install WordPress in cPanel

The next step on how to create a website is installing the software script to manage your site content. For this one, i highly recommend wordpress.

WordPress is a commonly used content management system that you can use to build your site. It’s free and open source with excellent community support. You’ll need to install WordPress through your hosting company’s control panel or cPanel.

Hostgator offers a quick install feature that makes it possible to install WordPress with a single click. Log in to your hosgator control panel , Once in there, you’ll go down to the “Quick Install” icon and click on it.

You’ll then see a link that says “WordPress” under the heading “Blog Software.” Once you click on that, you’ll need to click “Continue” and you’ll be taken to a data form. At that point, you fill in the information about your site and your email account. Click on “Install Now” and WordPress will be installed to your site.

Step 5 – Customize the Site

At this point, it’s time to customize your site.This is one of the most exciting parts of the process. This is where you actually get to add the content to your site and customize it according to your need.

With WordPress, You can create a blog, an e-commerce site, a portfolio site or any other kind of site that you want. You can add text content, videos, audio files, pictures and a lot of other cool features.
